Fuelling a passion for science in all

Great science belongs to everyone.

Perimeter Institute was created not only to pursue breakthroughs in theoretical physics, but also to share the power and joy of science with curious minds. Perimeter’s educational outreach – classroom teaching kits, online resources and videos, public events and webcast – has helped millions of people engage with cutting-edge scientific subjects.

All of Perimeter’s educational outreach offerings are made freely available to all, removing financial obstacles that can sometimes get in the way. This is possible thanks to Perimeter’s growing community of donors, who share the vision that scientific engagement is vital to a healthy society.

Perimeter’s educational resources have been used 80 million times in 129 countries; its teacher-training programs have reached more than 41,000 educators; Perimeter’s online outreach content, like lessons and public lectures, has been watched by millions.

When classrooms across the globe shifted to online formats in the wake of COVID-19 lockdowns, Perimeter’s outreach team created an online reference document specifically tailored to adapting Perimeter resources and other classroom lessons for a remote learning environment.

The team also pivoted to offer virtual interactive teacher training workshops. Teachers from around the world were shifting their schedules to participate in the workshops – waking up early, staying up late and everything in between, from Canada to China, France, Japan, Nepal, to Rwanda and beyond.

Below are some of the partners who help Perimeter share great science with all.

The Cowan Foundation’s support as a Perimeter Educational Outreach Champion goes back to 2005, when most of Perimeter’s outreach resources were still on paper. The Cowan Foundation’s philanthropy has helped Perimeter digitize and distribute resources into downloadable content to reach more young people in Canada and worldwide. The foundation’s support of Perimeter outreach is part of its commitment to accessible educational initiatives for all Canadian children.

Based in Cambridge, Ontario, Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) is dedicated to giving back to the local community. As an Educational Outreach Champion, TMMC has accelerated Perimeter’s work over the past decade to connect meaningfully with teachers and students in Waterloo Region through workshops and online resources.

The Bosch Community Fund, on behalf of ESCRYPT in Canada, has provided vital support to Perimeter outreach efforts since 2018. The fund supports STEM education and career development in Waterloo Region, including Perimeter’s efforts to reach young people from groups traditionally under-represented in physics.

Since 2019, Power Corporation of Canada has supported two of Perimeter’s flagship educational outreach programs: EinsteinPlus and the Perimeter Teacher Network. EinsteinPlus is a weeklong annual workshop for Canadian and international high school physics teachers, and the Teacher Network connects thousands of educators with Perimeter. The support of Power Corporation of Canada enabled Perimeter’s outreach team to quickly pivot its educational content to support online learning amid the stay-at-home orders of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2017, Linamar Corporation has been the Presenting Sponsor of Perimeter’s annual Inspiring Future Women in Science event. Every year, high-school students connect with women working in STEM fields picking up advice, encouragement, and vocational inspiration from leaders in exciting fields. Linamar’s support of this event has made it possible for thousands of young women to meet mentors and see the breadth of opportunities that a STEM education can provide.

Earlier this year, the Connor, Clark & Lunn Financial Group joined the growing group of Perimeter’s Educational Outreach Champions. Their support aims to help Perimeter further expand its outreach to underserved and indigenous communities in Canada.

Along with many more organizations and individuals, including RBC Foundation, proud supporter of International Summer School for Young Physicists and GoPhysics! Online Workshops, our passionate donors help Perimeter reach more young people ever year.

Perimeter is grateful to all the supporters who share our vision of building a brighter future through scientific engagement and education.
