## On the Quantum Theory of Effective Strings

Effective field theory is an indispensable tool for the analysis of emergent theories, in which we may know little about the UV degrees of freedom of the theory, and still tremendous amount of information can be revealed only by guessing the light degrees of freedom and symmetries. In this talk I will make use of this tool to describe the quantum theory of emergent long strings, open or closed, where the string need not be fundamental (thus not critical), nor it is strictly one dimensional.

## Hints on integrability in the Holographic RG

The Polchinski equations for the Wilsonian renormalization group in the $D$--dimensional matrix scalar field theory can be written at large $N$ in a Hamiltonian form. The Hamiltonian defines evolution along one extra holographic dimension (energy scale) and can be found exactly for the subsector of $Tr\phi^n$ (for all $n$) operators. We show that at low energies independently of the dimensionality $D$ the Hamiltonian system in question reduces to the {\it integrable} effective theory.

## Loop calculations in Superconformal Chern-Simons

We discuss the calculation of higher loop contributions to the anomalous dimensions of operators in N=6 Superconformal Chern-Simons theories. These lead us to conjecture the form of an interpolating function of the 't Hooft coupling that is not determined by integrability.

## Holography for non-relativistic theories

I will discuss the construction of a holographic dictionary for theories with non-relativistic conformal symmetry, relating the field theory to the dual spacetime. I will focus on the case of Lifshitz spacetimes, giving a definition of asymptotically locally Lifshitz spacetimes and discussing the calculation of field theory observables and holographic renormalization.

## Electron star holography

What is the gravity dual of a strongly interacting state of matter at zero temperature and finite charge density? The simplest candidates are extremal black holes. The presence of charged matter in the bulk can often mean that extremal black holes are not the ground state. In this talk I will discuss the physics of a class of solutions, essentially charged neutron stars, that can be thermodynamically preferred over extremal black holes.
