Undergraduate Theoretical Physics Summer Program

Perimeter Institute invites exceptional undergraduate students to join its research community for a fully funded two-week summer school. Ten summer school students will also part of a paid research internship program. Students will learn research tools and collaboration skills while immersed in the multi-disciplinary environment of the world's largest independent theoretical physics research centre. 


Perimeter Institute's Undergraduate Theoretical Physics Summer Program provides students entering the final year of their undergraduate program the opportunity to participate in groundbreaking research at a world-leading theoretical physics institute.

This program consists of two parts:

  1. Two-week Summer School (fully-funded): Twenty successful applicants will spend two weeks immersed in Perimeter's dynamic research environment -- attending courses on cutting-edge topics in physics, learning new techniques to solve interesting problems, working on group research projects, and potentially even publishing their work. A more detailed schedule will be posted once it is available.
  2. Research Internship: Applicants may also apply for an optional paid summer research internship. Accepted students will work on projects alongside Perimeter researchers. Students will have the rare opportunity to develop their research skills and absorb the rich variety of talks, conferences, and events at Perimeter Institute. Students chosen for an internship will be emailed the project proposals in February. Selection for the internship will occur at the same time summer school students are selected.

  • Constraining fundamental physics with cosmological data and machine learning (Cosmology)
  • Spacetime Algebra for Numerical Relativity (Strong Gravity)
  • Automating the decomposition of group representations (Quantum Foundations)
  • Geometry of Flag Configurations (Geometry and Algebraic Geometry)
  • Universe with a thermal origin (Cosmology)
  • Conformal boundary conditions in CS formulation of three-dimensional gravity (Quantum Gravity)

On the online application form, applicants can apply for the two-week summer school or for both the summer school and the research internship. Summer school and paid internship positions will be awarded by February 28, 2019. Those students selected for the research internship will be contacted in February with research project descriptions. All research interns must complete the two-week summer school.


  • Applications deadline: January 7, 2019 (applications will be considered until all positions are filled.)
  • References deadline:  January 14, 2019
  • Selection timeline: by February 28, 2019. Both summer school attendees and interns will be selected by this time.
  • Two-week summer school: May 27 to June 7, 2019.
  • Research Internship:  May 1 to August 30, 2019. (negotiable)


We are accepting excellent students with a demonstrated interest in the program and are entering the final year in the fall 2019 of their undergraduate program (for special exceptions, please contact Lenka Bojdova at lbojdova[at]perimeterinstitute.ca).

Documents to be submitted with the online application:

  • Transcripts (If transcripts are in a language other than English, a certified English translation is required too)
  • Two letters of recommendation (Note: all letters of reference must be on letterhead and must be signed by the referee)
  • Statement of interest (limited to one page)
  • Curriculum Vitae
  • TOEFL/IELTS score, or other (required if the language of instruction at your university is not English). If not available, an interview may be set up to test English proficiency.

Online applications can be submitted beginning October 17, 2018.


The two-week summer school is fully funded. Successful candidates will be provided with workspace, accommodations, and weekday meals (per diem are provided for weekends). Perimeter Institute will also cover economy travel expenses between the applicant's home institutions and Toronto Pearson Airport. Ground transportation from Toronto Pearson Airport to Perimeter Institute will be provided.

Students staying for the research internship will be paid through a Research Award.

The two-week summer school is fully funded to ensure that a diverse group of top students, both in background and nationality and without regard for financial means, may attend.

Upon completion of the online application, the system will automatically contact your referees with details on how to submit their reference letters.

What kind of visa do I need?

You need a visitor visa and/or eTA. You are only coming here to visit.

Do I have to pay a fee to attend the program?

No, the two-week summer school is fully funded.

Are the internship positions awarded based on performance during the summer school? 

No, internship positions will be awarded around February 28, 2019 and will be based on your initial application.

Will I be disadvantaged in the summer school selection process if I also apply for the internship? 

No. All the applications are considered only based on the academic success, recommendation letters and all the other submitted application materials.

I am currently in my last year, but I meet all the other criteria, may I still apply?

Yes, exceptions are allowed.
