Perimeter Educational Outreach Expands Across UK

Educators across the UK can now share the power, joy, and wonder of theoretical physics using Perimeter Institute’s award-winning classroom resources.

A new partnership between Perimeter Institute and the Institute of Physics will enable teachers across the United Kingdom to inspire and educate students with Perimeter’s interactive classroom kits.

The kits, which have already reached two million students across Canada, use video and interactive activities to encourage hands-on engagement with topics like dark matter, quantum reality, and the theory of relativity.

The Institute of Physics – a not-for-profit scientific society that aims to develop widespread awareness and understanding of physics – will introduce the Perimeter resources to schools through teachers in its Physics Teacher Network.

Teachers using Perimeter resources will be able to access and download the digital kits, each of which includes: a full-length high-definition video, teacher support materials and supplementary reading, customizable student activity worksheets, lab activities, and demonstrations.

The partnership between Perimeter Institute and the Institute of Physics was forged because both organizations have a mandate to spark passion in the STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) among young people.

“Perimeter and IOP are very likeminded organizations in our philosophy of physics education,” says Greg Dick, Perimeter’s Director of Educational Outreach. “They are aiming to empower teachers with the tools to really inspire students about the power of theoretical physics.”

Teachers within the Institute of Physics’ training network will have download access to Perimeter’s Inspirations, Explorations, and BrainSTEM Career Moves classroom kits, as well as the upcoming cosmology resource, scheduled for release in September 2014.

Teachers everywhere can now also download all the existing educational resources at reduced prices, to further extend the reach of these educational tools.

“We hope that this is the beginning of a fruitful partnership between the IOP and Perimeter Institute,” says Charles Tracy, the IOP’s head of education (pre-19).

“These workshops are going to be a great addition to our repertoire. Teachers and students will find it fascinating to explore cutting-edge physics at a school level.”
