Mike Lazaridis Named Visionary of the Year

Perimeter Institute Founder and Board Chair Mike Lazaridis has been named the 2013 Visionary of the Year by the Intelligent Community Forum (ICF).

In discussing Lazaridis’ selection, ICF co-founder Lou Zacharilla said, “Mike is perhaps the only person I can think of who combines in one lifetime the entire ‘triple helix’ that we find so compelling among intelligent communities,” citing his entrepreneurial success in revolutionizing human communication with the invention of the BlackBerry, his contributions to Waterloo’s world-class academic reputation, and his visionary support of local institutions, such as Perimeter Institute and the Institute for Quantum Computing at the University of Waterloo. Speaking about the honour, Lazaridis said, “I am pleased and humbled by this honour and the great company it places me in.” He added that he believes Perimeter and IQC will lead to Waterloo becoming known as “Canada’s Quantum Valley.” Lazaridis will accept the award and deliver an address at the annual summit of the ICF on June 7 in Brooklyn, New York. The ICF previously recognized Waterloo as its Intelligent Community of the Year in 2007.   ABOUT THE INTELLIGENT COMMUNITY FORUM Based in New York City, the Intelligent Community Forum is a think tank that studies how communities use information and communications technology.
