Eugenio Bianchi Wins New Loop Quantum Gravity Prize

Perimeter Institute congratulates Postdoctoral Researcher Eugenio Bianchi, who has just been recognized by his peers in the loop quantum gravity community with the inaugural Bronstein Prize.

Loop quantum gravity, or LQG, is one of several competing theories which attempt to reconcile quantum mechanics and gravity. The Bronstein Prize recognizes high quality of scientific results in loop quantum gravity, creativity and originality, and the significance of results to the field as a whole.

The prize is named for Matvei Petrovich Bronstein, who was the first to emphasize that quantum gravity requires a deep revision of classical space-time concepts. The promising young Ukrainian physicist died in the Stalinist Great Purge in 1938.

The Bronstein Prize was instituted at the “Loops 11” conference, held in Madrid in 2011. It was given for the first time when Perimeter hosted 194 of the top researchers in loop quantum gravity at the “Loops 13” conference in July. Perimeter was delighted to see it go to one of its own.

Through this prize, the LQG community recognized Bianchi “for his insightful contributions to black hole entropy, the discrete geometry of quantum spacetime and the propagation of gravitons thereon, and for his inspiring enthusiasm and collaborative spirit.”
