Perimeter Institute has established new collaboration agreements with the Weizmann Institute of Science in Israel, and with both TRIUMF, Canada’s national laboratory for particle and nuclear physics, and SNOLAB, Canada’s underground science laboratory specializing in neutrino and dark matter physics.

Like Perimeter, the Weizmann Institute of Science is a multidisciplinary research institution seeking to improve our understanding of nature, and its Faculty of Physics includes both theorists and experimental scientists. The three-year agreement between Perimeter and the Weizmann Institute will facilitate research visits and promote scientific collaboration between the two institutes. It will also encourage collaboration on educational outreach programming, an area of particular focus at both institutes.

Perimeter has become an international hub for the study of theoretical physics and the current agreements follow similar partnerships with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics, the Centre for Theoretical Cosmology at the University of Cambridge, and the International Centre for Theoretical Physics – South American Institute for Fundamental Research, among others.

Closer to home, Perimeter has also partnered with fellow Canadian institutes TRIUMF and SNOLAB to convene a new international summer school for graduate students and postdoctoral researchers on hot topics in particle physics. The Tri-Institute Summer School on Elementary Particles (TRISEP) will feature leading particle physicists lecturing on collider physics, neutrino physics, dark matter, Monte Carlo techniques, and physics beyond the Standard Model.

“Canada’s growth into a world leader in basic physics is very exciting. This summer school is a collaborative enterprise between SNOLAB, TRIUMF, and Perimeter Institute to attract top students globally and prepare them to become leaders in the field,” said Neil Turok, Director of Perimeter Institute.

Perimeter Associate Faculty members Cliff Burgess and Itay Yavin are members of the Advisory Committee for TRISEP 2013, which will take place at TRIUMF in Vancouver from July 1 to 12, 2013. Further summer schools are planned for 2014 and 2015, hosted by SNOLAB and Perimeter respectively.

About Perimeter Institute

Perimeter Institute is the world’s largest research hub devoted to theoretical physics. The independent Institute was founded in 1999 to foster breakthroughs in the fundamental understanding of our universe, from the smallest particles to the entire cosmos. Research at Perimeter is motivated by the understanding that fundamental science advances human knowledge and catalyzes innovation, and that today’s theoretical physics is tomorrow’s technology. Located in the Region of Waterloo, the not-for-profit Institute is a unique public-private endeavour, including the Governments of Ontario and Canada, that enables cutting-edge research, trains the next generation of scientific pioneers, and shares the power of physics through award-winning educational outreach and public engagement.
