Joy Christian obtained his PhD from Boston University in Foundations of Quantum Theory in 1991, under the supervision of Professor Abner Shimony. He then received a Junior Research Fellowship from Wolfson College of the University of Oxford, where he has remained affiliated both with the College and the Physics Department of the University. He arrived at the Perimeter Institute as a Long Term Visitor in September 2005.

Joy's principal research interests lie in foundations of physics, in particular in foundations of quantum theory and general relativity, with a view to a theory of quantum gravity. His current research is focused on the notions of causality and time, and how these notions are implemented within the basic theories of physics. He is also investigating possible experimental signatures of quantum gravity, including those that might arise from a supposed breakdown of quantum theory itself near the Planck scale, and how these signatures may be detected in either terrestrial or cosmological scenarios.
