The far-from-equilibrium birth of a holographic superfluid

Holographic duality maps the dynamics of certain quantum field theories onto the dynamics of classical gravity in one higher dimension. Under certain conditions black holes in these so called ``holographic spacetimes" can exhibit instabilities where hair can develop for sufficiently low Hawking temperatures. These gravitational systems are dual to superfluids with the instability dual to the superfluid phase transition. I will discuss the black hole dynamics near the phase transition and their dual quantum field theory interpretation via the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.
