About the International Summer School for Young Physicists (ISSYP)
As part of its mandate to develop a rich and dynamic physics outreach program, in August 2003, Perimeter Institute launched Young Physicists of Canada, a national two-week summer school designed to capture the scientific imagination of grade 11 students (secondaire V in Québec) and nurture their passion for physics through an exploration of the fascinating mysteries of our universe. The 20 select students from across Canada — 10 girls and 10 boys — were exposed to a wide range of fundamental scientific concepts, from the bizarre quantum world of atoms and subatomic particles to black holes, warped spacetime and the expanding universe.

The 2005 program included 40 enthusiastic participants comprising 22 students from across Canada and 18 international students from countries including Brazil, Germany, Italy, Poland, Singapore, South Korea and the United States. In addition, 6 teachers representing Poland, Brazil, Italy, Singapore, Australia and the United States took part in workshop activities.

The 2006 ISSYP program expanded due to increased demand and accommodated 100 students in two separate sessions. Students came from every region of Canada and from around the globe – including South Africa, New Zealand, Australia, Singapore, South Korea, Romania, Poland, Germany, Denmark, Italy, Spain, the UK, the USA and Brazil.

The program is open to students currently enrolled in Grade 11 (or secondaire V in Québec), or the international equivalent. Participants are expected to be proficient in both written and spoken English, the common working language at the Institute.
