Evolving Laws

August 16 and 17, 2005

On August 16 and 17 a small group of scholars representing several fields convened at PI for two days of discussion on a topic that intrigued all of them: do the laws of nature have to be fixed and eternal, or could they evolve in time?

Quantum Information, Computation and Logic Workshop: Exploring New Connections
July 17 - 22, 2005

Perimeter Institute will be hosting a workshop to explore the connections between quantum information and computing and quantum logic. The meeting aims to establish collaboration between leading experts in the two fields and will be preceded by two days of introductory lectures.

6th PI/UT/CITA Workshop (CIAR Cosmology & Gravity Focus Group)

Perimeter Institute, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada
Monday April 11, 2005

Also sponsored by the Cosmology and Gravity Program of the Canadian Institute for Advanced Research

This mini-workshop will be the next of an ongoing series of one-day meetings between researchers at Perimeter, CITA and University of Toronto. These meetings are held to share new ideas and encourage interactions in our common fields of interest: superstrings, cosmology, particle theory and quantum gravity.

The meeting will be held in the fourth floor seminar room of the Perimeter Institute on Monday April 11th. As usual, the format of the meeting will be a series of short 30-minute talks to seed informal discussion. The seminars will start at 11:30am -- refreshments will be available starting at 11:00am.

Organizers:

Speakers:
  • Anupam Mazumdar (NORDITA): Constraints on string scale and coupling from non-Gaussianity
  • Koenraad Schalm (Columbia): Cosmological effective actions imply new physics in the CMB
  • Ewan Stewart (KAIST/CITA): Modular Cosmology
  • Gary Shiu (Wisconsin/PI): What is String Phenomenology?
  • Yuri Levin (CITA): LIGO -- Astronomical Observatory and Physics Playground
  • Panel on Precision Cosmology (Three short 10 min presentations):
    • J. Sievers (CITA): News from CBI
    • S. Majumdar (CITA): w from LSS
    • D. Podolsky (CITA): EOS in very early universe

Generalized Geometries in String Theory
February 15-17 & March 1-3

Calabi-Yau manifolds are often used to describe the hidden dimensions of string theory and these intricate geometries have proven to be a rich topic of research in both physics and mathematics. Recently, however, Hitchin has pioneered the study of more general geometries, which has lead to interesting developments in both formal and physical aspects of string theory. Marco Gualtieri, Yi Li and Mariana Grana will be giving lecture series on various aspects of generalized geometries and their applications in string theory.
