Advancement Communications Writer/Coordinator - Competition #20091127

The Advancement Communications Writer/Coordinator is a highly skilled writer/editor who will plan, author and generate completed materials in support of the Institute’s many initiatives, with particular focus on PI’s institutional advancement activities that involve fundraising among private individuals, corporate partners and institutions.    

The authoring of materials requires insight on various cultures and motivations tied to personal philanthropy, corporate sponsorships and institutional partnerships.  Awareness of other communities - involving scientific research, outreach, government and the media – is beneficial to writing advancement materials in the full context of the Institute.    

Reporting to the Department of External Relations and Communications, the Writer/Coordinator will work to the full satisfaction of the Development Department.
      
Major Duties and Responsibilities

The Advancement Communications Writer/Coordinator will create, author, produce and deliver print and electronic materials in support of PI advancement initiatives, including Case for support, Major Gift proposals, stewardship reports, memorandum of understanding etc.

The Writer/Coordinator will work within PI’s wider Communications team and will be ready to assist with broader external relations and communications activities, as assigned, in support of the Institute   

In providing the above services and generating the materials, it is expected that the Writer/Editor will create the templates required to use in an ongoing manner, will fully author all content and (for the most part) perform all layout, printing and delivery duties as may be needed. 

Content will be created in a manner that is consistent with all PI descriptions of various scientific and outreach activities, the overarching PI ‘brand’ and other core messaging.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required

  • Post secondary education in English, journalism, marketing or area directly applicable to funding and advancement activities
  • Minimum of two years experience writing and editing within a fundraising, marketing or communications environment
  • Strong analytical, editorial, persuasive writing and reporting skills involving donor and sponsor procurement and retention
  • Strong understanding of cultures involving philanthropy, corporate sponsorships and institutional partnerships to secure funding
  • Impeccable writing, grammar, punctuation and proofing skills
  • Hands-on project management skills involving use of document creation and publishing programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.)
  • Knowledge of contact management systems, particularly Raisers Edge
  • Strong appreciation for scientific research and educational outreach
  • Knowledge of media and government
