About EinsteinPlus
Modern physics is potentially the richest, most fascinating and thought-provoking part of a high school student's exposure to the wonders and mysteries of our universe. To help teachers achieve this potential, Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics has designed an international teachers' workshop. The Einstein Plus program was created by physicists at Perimeter Institute in conjunction with local and regional professional educators. Perimeter Institute is Canada's premier centre for research in theoretical physics. There is no place in our country where the excitement of physics knowledge and discovery is felt more passionately! The main goals of the workshop are to enhance teachers' personal interest, understanding and enthusiasm for modern physics and equip them with new, accessible and useable tools and strategies for teaching this field of endeavour to their students. Perimeter covers all necessary expenses for each workshop participant. This includes return travel from anywhere in Canada, accommodation during the workshop and all but one of the meals for the workshop's duration. Workshop Summary
Areas of physics covered: - Special relativity: postulates of special relativity, time dilation, length contraction, spacetime diagrams, paradoxes such as the twin paradox
- Aspects of general relativity: black holes and the GPS
- Quantum mechanics: wave-particle duality, quantum secret codes (a.k.a. quantum cryptography) and quantum computers
Workshop includes special keynotes presentations by Perimeter Institute researchers on cutting-edge topics such as superstring theory, dark energy and dark matter and quantum computers. Pedagogical topics explored: - Common student misconceptions about quantum mechanics and relativity and how you can deal with them.
