Partnership in Science Communication to Advance Ideas Throughout Ontario and BeyondWATERLOO, Ontario, Canada, September 16, 2011 – Perimeter Institute and TVO are pleased to announce a new five-year partnership in bringing science-themed events and Perimeter’s highly regarded public lecture series to wider audiences. TVO and Perimeter Institute share a belief that building scientific literacy is fundamental to a sustainable and prosperous future and the partnership will see greater collaboration on science communication activities – on-location, online, and on television. "Perimeter Institute brings together the brightest scientific minds in the world to share their ideas, while TVO has the media toolkit to make those ideas more accessible," says Lisa de Wilde, Chief Executive Officer of TVO. "Working together we can open up new worlds in science and physics for Ontarians of all ages."
"The role of science is pivotal in advancing our world, and is why Perimeter Institute and TVO are intensifying efforts to share the joys of research, discovery and innovation," says Neil Turok, Perimeter Institute Director. "We are delighted to be working with the team at TVO, our like-minded and highly motivated partner in science communications."
The new partnership builds on a successful history of engaging TVO’s audiences with the top scientific minds that converge at Perimeter. The two Ontario-based organizations have successfully collaborated on the Quantum to Cosmos: Ideas for the Future science festival in 2009; Hawking at the Perimeter in 2010; and the Equinox Summit: Energy 2030 in 2011. TVO has also aired Perimeter’s award-winning documentary The Quantum Tamers: Revealing Our Weird & Wired Future. More recently, the two organizations partnered on the Grand Opening of the Stephen Hawking Centre at Perimeter Institute with a special broadcast Stephen Hawking: The Power of Ideas as well as other live and on demand public lectures.. "Perimeter experiences huge demand from students, teachers and members of the general public for quality outreach content and experiences," says John Matlock, Director of External Relations and Public Affairs. "Q2C Festival activities, for example, have been viewed by over one million people through a combination of the on-location events, live broadcasts, online streaming, on-demand playbacks and podcast downloads. The TVO-Perimeter partnership in science communication will help ensure ongoing high quality content in accessible formats for all." About TVO
