Event Horizons 2007 - 2008 Season

WATERLOO, ON, May 5, 2007 - Drawing upon Perimeter Institute’s successful history of attracting many distinguished artists to Waterloo region, the 2007-08 Event Horizons season will be no exception and offers several unique series and a special guest performance.    These ticketed and sponsored cultural activities help make PI an accessible and stimulating destination for members of the general community while, concurrently, adding to the creative fabric of the overall Institute.  Michael Duschenes, Chief Operating Officer of Perimeter Institute, says – “Perimeter has now established itself as a great concert venue. It is seen as a highly desirable place to perform by many of the world’s finest musicians. They enjoy our intimate performance space and the unique atmosphere at the Institute. We are becoming well known for our fabulous audiences.  It is very exciting to be able to welcome these exceptional musicians to Waterloo.”

In this tradition and in an extraordinary Special Performance, PI is proud to present the world’s most celebrated classical musician, cellist Yo-Yo Ma.  His many-faceted career is testament to his continual search for new ways to communicate with audiences and stimulate the imagination.  On March 4th, 2008, Yo-Yo Ma and Friends will perform in the Mike Lazaridis Theatre of Ideas.  Duschenes adds, “It’s a great honour that Yo-Yo Ma has included Perimeter Institute on his very busy performing schedule next year. Hearing him perform in our intimate theatre will be an experience of a lifetime.”  Only subscribers to the Classical World Artists receive first chance to purchase tickets to this outstanding special appearance.

Perimeter Institute’s Classical World Artists series presents additional internationally acclaimed artists.  The four-concert series will begin on September 27th, 2007, with the presentation of the Academy of St. Martin in the Fields Chamber Ensemble.  Captivating audiences and critics around the world with its sound of a chamber orchestra and polish of a string quartet, the Academy brings its 40th anniversary celebration to Perimeter Institute.

Following an unforgettable performance in 2005, Perimeter Institute is delighted to welcome back Emanuel Ax on December 7th, 2007.  Considered to be in the first rank of his generation of pianists, Mr. Ax is celebrated by audiences and critics alike for his poetic temperament and unsurpassed virtuosity.

The third event, a recital by eminent pianist Richard Goode, will take place on January 18th, 2008. Widely acclaimed as one of today's most persuasive interpreters of the piano repertoire, Richard Goode is renowned for his consummate technique, compelling emotional involvement and the power, depth and expressiveness of his music making.

To close the series, we bring together an incredible duo of powerhouse musicians. Recognized as one of the supreme violinists of our time, Cho-Liang Lin is lauded the world over for the eloquence of his playing and his superb musicianship.  On March 28th, 2008, he is joined by internationally acclaimed Canadian pianist Jon Kimura Parker, whose extraordinary career has taken him from Carnegie Hall and the Sydney Opera House to Baffin Island and Zimbabwe.

The Event Horizons portfolio of ticketed events also includes the ever popular Jazz in the Black Hole.   These monthly performances feature the hottest top names and rising stars of the jazz world – all in the relaxed environment of the Black Hole Bistro, located on the 4th Floor of PI’s award-winning facility.  Details for this series as well as Art Talks and Dinner Concerts can be found in coming months on the Institute’s website at www.perimeterinstitute.ca/event horizons.
