Reconstructing Quantum Theory

August 9 - 16, 2009
Perimeter Institute

Over the last two decades, there has been growing interest in elucidating the physical content of quantum theory by attempting to formulate physically comprehensible principles from which the quantum formalism can be reconstructed. Over this period, many reconstructive attempts have been made by researchers using a variety of different conceptual and mathematical frameworks.

The goals of the workshop are two-fold. First, to enable researchers that have been involved in reconstruction to become aware of the diversity of reconstructive approaches that exist and to understand the key underlying physical ideas, with the hope that this will lead to more compelling reconstructions that provide deeper insight into the nature of quantum reality. Second, to involve key researchers in areas, such as quantum gravity, that have the potential to benefit from reconstructive work so that they become more clearly aware of the area, and can, reciprocally, suggest questions that can be usefully asked of reconstructions.
