Advancement Writer

Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics (PI) is an independent, non-profit, scientific research organization working to advance our understanding of physical laws and develop new ideas about the very essence of space, time, matter and information. Located in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, PI also provides a wide array of research training and educational outreach activities to nurture scientific talent and share the importance of discovery and innovation among students, teachers and the general public. In partnership with the Governments of Ontario and Canada, PI is a successful example of public-private collaboration in scientific research, training and outreach.

Reporting to the Director of Advancement and the Director of Publications, the Advancement Writer is a talented writer/editor who will author and edit a variety of materials in support of Perimeter’s many initiatives, with particular focus on Perimeter’s advancement activities for individuals, corporate partners and foundations.     

Responsibilities include:

Proposal Writing

  • Create, author and edit proposals and discussion documents for presentation to prospects and donors at all giving levels
  • Collaborate with Advancement and other staff who manage relationships with prospective and current donors
  • Create passionate, articulate and motivating stakeholder and donor stewardship reports

Case for support and key messages

  • Lead the creation and rollout of a fresh suite of case for support materials
  • Provide support to Advancement and others on customized messaging, language and format of donor communications
 
Donor communications

  • Research, write and prepare engaging outcome, stewardship reports and memorandums of understanding
  • Produce letters and other materials that inspire donor loyalty and bring to life the impact of their gifts
  • Create templates for various donor communications efforts
  • Publications
  • Gather Institute news, research, author and fact-check articles, news releases, reports, and other documents

Executive communications

  • Draft briefing notes and speaking remarks as needed for senior executives and volunteers for announcements and special events

Requirements:

  • Post-secondary education in English, journalism, marketing or area directly applicable to funding and advancement activities  
  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience writing and editing within a fundraising, marketing and communications environment
  • Strong analytical, editorial, persuasive writing and reporting skills involving donor and sponsor procurement and retention
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high quality work to tight deadlines
  • Impeccable writing, grammar, punctuation and proofing skills
  • The ability to think strategically, work proactively, and manage competing priorities in a complex environment
  • A keen intellect with a strong appreciation for scientific research and educational outreach
  • Demonstrated proficiency with document creation and publishing programs (Word, Excel, Publisher, etc.)
  • Knowledge of contact management systems considered an asset
  • Understanding of media and government considered an asset
