Frequently Asked Questions

What are the dates for ISSYP 2010?

ISSYP 2010 will be held Thursday, July 8 to Saturday, July 24, 2010.

How will students be able to interact with Perimeter Institute (PI) scientists?

Students will interact with PI scientists in the following ways:

  • Participation in small-group research projects led by expert researchers associated with PI.

  • Group instruction from a mentor (PI physicist) that will provide an up-close look at what physics research is really like by guiding the students through an open-ended problem that will stretch their minds.
  • Attendance at keynote presentations given by PI experts on their fields of research that go far beyond anything available in popular treatments or textbooks and provide deep insight into what lies at the forefront of our understanding of the physical world.

How much does it cost?

As part of its outreach mandate, Perimeter Institute is able to cover all necessary costs for each student within Canada. This includes all transportation within Canada, accommodation for the duration of the program, and all activities and meals.

Students residing outside of Canada must provide for airfare from their home country to Toronto's Pearson International Airport (YYZ), as well as personal health insurance. PI will cover transportation to and from the airport, accommodation for the duration of the program, and all activities and meals.

How will students be looked after during the two week program?

Students will attend the program at Perimeter Institute's award-winning facility and original facility located in Waterloo, Ontario. While at PI, students are supervised by the Senior Outreach Manager, two senior-level physics teachers and a teaching assistant. Students eat meals in the Black Hole Bistro, alongside PI staff, researchers and faculty.

Students will reside in the Ron Eydt Village student residence on the nearby University of Waterloo campus. Whilst there, they will be under the supervision of experienced male and female chaperones. These chaperones will also plan and supervise a variety of evening and weekend social activities.

Parents may contact the Outreach Coordinator at jtaylor@perimeterinstitute.ca or +1-519-569-7600 ext. 5080, should they need to reach students at any time during the summer school.

Are relatives or friends able to visit with students during the program?

Students who attend the program will want to get the most out of the ISSYP experience, including engaging in all activities, eating meals together, participating in fun evening activities and bonding with their peers. The two-week program goes by quickly and it is important that students take full advantage of their opportunity to engage in research at Perimeter Institute. Should there be an emergency or other urgent circumstance where a visit is necessary, we ask that a short visit be coordinated at Ron Eydt Village during evening activities.

All requests made by parents or guardians for visits during program dates must be forwarded to the Outreach Coordinator (at jtaylor@perimeterinstitute.ca or +1-519-569-7600 ext. 5080) at least two weeks in advance of program start. Chaperones will be available to supervise students during all pre-arranged visits.

Who is eligible to apply?

Students are welcome to apply if they:
  • have a passion for and strong ability in physics and mathematics as reflected in high school course marks and extracurricular activities;
  • are attending Grade 11 or Grade 12 secondary school (final two years of high school) and have not yet begun full-time studies at a post-secondary institution.
  • intend to pursue studies in physics at the university level in the future.

What is the application process?

Students must complete the application procedure and send all information to Perimeter Institute by Wednesday, March 17, 2010.

Applications may be completed online or downloaded at:
www.issyp.ca

How will successful applicants be notified?

Successful candidates for the 2010 program will be notified by email or phone, if necessary,by April 30, 2010. The final, official list of participants will also be posted online.
