Perimeter’s Black Hole Bistro provides the backdrop for the new Singularities series, featuring contemporary innovators and rising stars from diverse realms such as music, comedy, theatre, and poetry. The Bistro’s intimate setting lends itself to a lively, informal atmosphere prone to improvisation, and audiences can expect unscripted moments and one-of-a-kind experiences where the only safe bet is a memorable evening. The cultural and bistro events are ancillary activities made possible through paid ticketing, private donors and sponsorships. Event details appear below. Colin Stetson | Colin Stetson, solo saxophone Debashis Sinha, percussion Sarah Neufeld, violin March 31, 2012 at 8:00 pm (Doors open at 7:30 pm) Now in the Mike Lazaridis Theatre of IdeasDinner Reservations at 6:00pm – Limited spots available by reservation only at (519) 569-7600 ext. 8021 or bistro[at]pitp[dot]ca. The second instalment in 2012’s Singularities series brings the genre-defying creativity of Montreal-based saxophonist Colin Stetson to Perimeter, fresh off his 2011 Polaris Prize shortlisted album, New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges.
In his young career, Stetson has amassed an impressive resumé, playing alongside such artists as Tom Waits, Arcade Fire, Bon Iver and TV On The Radio. On this night, Stetson demonstrates his virtuosic abilities on the saxophone and mastery of circular breathing techniques that he uses to produce compositions so layered and complex that few would believe they were the work of just one artist. No looping. No overdubs. Just a supremely talented musician creating extraordinary sound worlds with a single instrument.
Stetson will be preceded by opening sets from Sarah Neufeld and Debashis Sinha. Neufeld plays violin for famed Canadian indie rockers Arcade Fire and Juno Award-winning instrumentalists Bell Orchestre. Sinha is a multi-talented performer whose music draws on both his passion for electronic soundscapes and his unique training with master drummers from many world music traditions.
