2008/2009 Awards

Parampreet Singh, "Highlights of 2008-2009" in Classical and Quantum Gravity
July 2009

"Are loop quantum cosmos never singular?" by postdoctoral researcher Parampreet Singh was selected among the "Highlights of 2008-2009" in Classical and Quantum Gravity.

Robert Myers, "Highlights of 2008-2009" in Classical and Quantum Gravity
July 2009

"Quark Soup al dente: Applied Superstring Theory" by Robert Myers and S.E. Vasquez was selected among the "Highlights of 2008-2009" in Classical and Quantum Gravity (CQG).

Freddy Cachazo, Gribov Medal of the European Physical Society
July 2009

Faculty member Freddy Cachazo was awarded the prestigious Gribov Medal from the European Physical Society (EPC), given once every two years for outstanding work in Theoretical Particle Physics and/or Field Theory by a physicist under 35. Cachazo and his collaborators developed techniques greatly simplifying the complex calculations essential to the design and interpretation of particle accelerator experiments, such as those at the Large Hadron Collider, probing the fundamental constituents of matter.

Fotini Markopoulou, Third Juried Prize, FQXi Essay Contest
May 2009

In the first eassy contest held by the Foundational Questions Institute (FQXi), Faculty member Fotini Markopoulou was awarded the Third Juried Prize for her essay entitled "Space does not exist, so time can".

Lee Smolin, 2009 AAPT Klopsteg Memorial Award
March 2009

Faculty member Lee Smolin became the 2009 recipient of the Klopsteg Memorial Award from the American Association of Physics Teachers (AATP). Klopsteg winners are chosen for their extraordinary accomplishments in communicating the excitement of physics to the general public.

Raymond Laflamme, Elected Royal Society Fellow
September 2008

Associate Faculty member Raymond Laflamme has solved both practical and theoretical problems of fundamental importance to quantum information processing, and has been a leader in bringing Canada to international prominence in this field. Amongst his most important theoretical results was inventing, with Knill and Milburn, a radically new approach to quantum computing using linear optics. Using NMR techniques, his experimental group at IQC holds the world record for the largest quantum computer achieved to date. This announcement is preceded by a distinguished list of awards and recognitions for Laflamme, including a Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Quantum Information.

Cliff Burgess, Elected Royal Society Fellow
September 2008

PI Associate Faculty member Cliff Burgess has made an impact over an unusually broad range of fields in theoretical physics. His contributions span superstring theory, early universe cosmology, particle phenomenology, astrophysics and condensed matter physics. His innovative constructions of cosmological inflation based on string theory opened new areas of research and have brought string theory to the stage where it may be tested by experimental observations. The RSC Fellowship follows numerous other awards including the Killam Research Fellowship in March 2005.

Raymond Laflamme, Premier's Discovery Award
May 2008

PI Associate Member Raymond Laflamme has received the prestigious Premier’s Discovery Award for his contributions to natural sciences and engineering.  This award’s program, fostered by the Ministry of Research and Innovation, recognizes individual achievements by the province’s most eminent senior researchers – accomplishments demonstrating Ontario’s leadership in the globally competitive arena of scientific research.

Richard Cleve, CAP/CRM Prize in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics
April 2008

PI Associate Member Richard Cleve is the recipient of the 2008 Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) and Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) Prize in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics. The objective of the CAP-CRM Prize is to recognize research excellence in the fields of theoretical and mathematical physics done in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian organization.
